There are all different types of plastics that are used in the manufacturing of products, but engineering plastics are a special kind of plastic materials that typically have excellent mechanical and thermal properties. These materials are often called thermoplastics. While there are all different types of thermoplastic products, there are some that are better and more cost effective than others, such as Torlon material.
Torlon is the highest performing melt, processable plastic. It has outstanding resistance to high heat and has the ability to continuously perform at temperatures up to 500°F in extremely stressful conditions. Parts that are machined from Torlon material stock shapes have many other impressive characteristics including, but not limited to:
- Better compressive strength and greater impact resistance compared to the majority of advanced engineering plastics
- Low coefficient of linear thermal expansion
- High creep resistance
- Excellent dimensional stability over a broad temperature range
- Is an amorphous material with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 537°F
There is more than one grade of Torlon material, and while each delivers high quality, they have been designed to be effective for different types of applications. For instance, the electrical grade (4230) is often used for electrical insulator and connectors because it has high dielectric strength, whereas the bearing grade (4301) is ideal for extreme service wear applications, such as reciprocating compressor parts, non-lubricated bearings, bearing cages, and seals. Thus, this thermoplastic has proved itself to be incredibly useful for many engineering projects and purposes.
